Do you think that the vampires in Twighlight are significantly different from the Bram Stoker/Ann Rice/Joss Wheadon mold? I'll grant you that I've never read any vampire fiction where the vampire "sparkled" in the sun but while Twighlight has it's attractions it doesn't strike me as all that original.

The way I see it, the evolution of the sexy vampire goes hand-in-hand with the increasing youth-obsession within Western culture. There are more and more creams, serums, and pills each year intended to help us maintain an artificially young appearance. Within that mindset, the option to become eternally young, strong, and possibly have the power to enhance others' attraction is a seductive thing. Giving up tanning (especially in light of the harmful effects of UV rays) and a change of diet are small sacrifices in exchange.

While Anne Rice and Joss (*not* Josh, by the way) Whedon may not have created this newish subspecies, they have certainly been among the most visible writers to advance its popularity. Which is a bit strange, considering Rice's more recent uber-religious turn, and Whedon's early insistence that vampires in their "game face" be extremely ugly. Of course, he also didn't predict Spike and Dru's popularity with the fanbase that prompted him to forestall his plans to kill off Spike after half a dozen episodes. Little did he know that the smartass punk would become one of his most popular and complex characters.

Women drool over the sexy vampires like Spike. They just imagine him taking them in his arms and saying, "Yes I'm a big bad vampire, but I have a soft and vulnerable side. It's just waiting for someone like you to come and set it free, then I'll be your big fluffy puppy with bad teeth."

Sexy and vulnerable vampires sell books/tv shows/movies/etc... You probably wouldn't get much of a following if your vampires were a barely corporeal mist that dissolved their intended victim like acid or the “classic” nosfuratu that is bald and rat-like.

No doubt that relatively modern ( let's say 19th Century to the present ) had a strong element of repressed sexuality finding an expression of culmination in a type of intimate exchange of bodily fluids. add to that the idea of a sort of ethereal beauty never dreamed of in folklore and eternal youth. No wonder this kind of fiction is so popular and no wonder that authors often temper the vampire protagonist's joie pas de la mort with a generous helping of angst. Not Spike of course, at least not when when we first met him and not for a good long while after.

In April 2001 James Marsters (in Impact magazine)said
"Well, I think vampires and vampirism are a very clear metaphor for sex. Male vampires almost never bite males and female vampires almost never bite females. Very clearly, it's a sexual thing. And vampires get to take whatever they want whenever they want it. Vampires don't need wallets or credit cards. They like something, they take it."

I might not fully agree with the vampirism = sex idea, but the last three sentences are true.

Also, of course in the Dresden Files, Thomas is a "sex/emotion vampire. :) I think Thomas is my next favourite character after Harry, perhaps it's the family resemblence?

Hey Lisa,
Thanks for your thoughts. In the world of fictional books, fans enjoy reading about the consequence free lifestyle that vampires have, eternally young, beautiful, thin/muscular, and with a body durable enough to survive any mistakes they may make, because let’s face it, they’re not gonna learn from them. Authors use them for that reason, they sell books.

The “real” vampires, the ones that exist in history and the mythology of ever society that has ever existed (not hyperbole, but a fact), are not all about obtaining what they lost or obtaining the unobtainable. It’s about eating. It’s about surviving on what your people, your society, your culture hold near and dear, and then killing it.

Vampires will exist so long as mankind has a fear of something. And considering that we are animals, and genetically predisposed to have reactionary fears.

In my studies, I have found no society of people who seek to “save” the vampire. A few want to “lay it back to rest” ie: Kill IT. Because the vampire is a corpse and cannot be returned to life. Everybody knows that.
