I’m Just Wild about Harry!
Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden & His Love Life

NOTE: If you are a fan of the Dresden Files and are not currently “caught up,” why the heck not?! Go, get caught up, and then come back and read my blog. I’ll wait, but don’t dawdle. Jeeze Louise…
I was raised to be a reader. Both my parents were readers. My mom taught all of us kids how to read before we attended out first day of school. We had weekly trips to the library, and bedrooms full of books. To this day, my brothers and I are still readers. And guess what, so are their kids. Ooohhooo It’s the circle, the circle of life!
It’s a rare thing to find an author you like. When you do, you don’t ever want to let him go, you hope that the book you just read was his 72nd because you love his writing so much you want to rush out get the other books he wrote and immerse your entire self in his imaginary word.
I feel that I was blessed the day I discovered Jim Butcher‘s series The Dresden Files, and if you read my blogs you know me-I’m a hard sell and a snarky bee-och. I was hooked from page one. I stayed up all night and read it till my eyes bled. Then I wiped away the blood, used a bottle of Visine and kept right on going. Next day I went to the book store and jumped for joy when I saw that there were three other books I had not yet read AND another coming out the following month. La la la Heaven, I’m in heaven….
I first realized I loved Harry Dresden in chapter two of the first novel, Storm Front. He was walking to a murder scene. A police officer, Karrin Murphy had Dresden come in as a consultant. Murphy is a bitsy little thing, a perky ski-jump nosed chick cop, tuff as nails with a bouncy blond pony tail. Harry walked along side of her down the sidewalk. He’s a towering 6 foot plus lean and wiry guy in a billowing trench coat and leather fedora. Harry listened to her brief him on the situation while they headed towards the double doors of the apartment building where the murder took place-until he realized that Murphy was walking just a little faster than he was. He instantly realized, because he’s a brilliant detective, that she was going to reach the double doors just a step before him, and in doing so, she would no doubt open the door first. Harry, a diehard yet lovable chauvinist couldn’t let that happen, he lengthened out his stride and noted he lost track of what she had said, but continued to “mmm” like he had been listening. He calculated that his long legs were going to get him to the door first, Murphy having to take three to his one, but now he noted, as a good detective would, she was up to four. She was racing him and she was onto his plan, like an old and good friend would be. This wackiness escalated, the two of them not running down the street mind you, but literally power-walking as casually as one can without actually running just to see who would get to the door first. Harry won, and panting “my Lady,” opened the door as Murphy walked in panting back, something like “chauvinist pig.” (A few of the finer points could be off a bit, but in essence, I captured the moment.)
I knew right then and there that I was in love with Harry Dresden and that I would love the rest of this book. I knew that I was a fan of this Jim Butcher guy, and that I would recommended this book to everyone I knew. All of this came to pass.
Over the years and books I’ve gotten to know Harry pretty well. I had thought at one time that he and Murphy would start dating, but then I realized that she was not the girl for him. Murphy is the type of girl you have as a friend. She transcends gender. She is “one of the guys” but can lend her feminine perspective and wisdom when Harry is in need. And Harry is often times in need of both. Was there ever a thing between them? Yea, but the timing was never “right,” and the fact that as the series goes on and they talk about how the timing was never right is proof enough that they are friends. Real friends talk. Besides, when the series started, Harry had a girlfriend, of sorts. The very sexy newspaper reporter, Susan Rodriguez.
Harry and Susan. They were a fun couple with an impending cloud of doom circling over head. When book one, Storm Front, opens, Harry and Susan are more than sex-buddies, but less than boyfriend and girlfriend. It’s complicated. She works for a weird news tabloid called The Arcane and needs freaky stories about aliens and monsters. On occasion she is working a story that is also a case Harry is trying to solve. From time to time Susan needs a lead for a story or Harry knows that Susan has the scoop on something, and after a little wining and dining, their pillow talk turns to work and information is freely exchanged. Harry really kinda digs her, a lot, and she is a hot little Latino number as well as a startling flirt and magnificent tease. She likes the stringless relationship they have. Susan keeps Harry at a reachable distance, but never too close, a thing that suits Harry well enough. See, he is still fearful of the “L” word (love not lesbian) cause of his first love, Elaine. He never got over the fact that he had to kill her. Go fig.
In Storm Front we learn that Harry and Elaine did their wizard apprenticeship under a guy named Justin DuMorne. Justin was evil and was brainwashing them. Harry was able to break the bonds, but Elaine could not. One thing lead to another and in a literal blaze of glory, Harry killed them both. Or so he thought for a long, long time.
BTW – In my interview with Jim Butcher, (which is available to view here: Jim Butcher Video Interview ) I asked Jim some pretty direct questions about Justin, about whether or not he’s really dead, because, I don’t buy it, not for a minute. Go ahead and watch it and see for yourself who squirms in the chair. Just keep in mind that I was really nervous and fidgety and the chair I was sitting in was three sizes too small for me.
My grandma had a saying. It went “Whoever loves the least rules the relationship.” As the books progress, Harry and Susan eventually come together, in book two, Fool Moon. They learn to love one another. Susan is still driven by her work and Harry loves her. He buys a ring. Harry can’t afford to feed himself and is always late on his rent but he manages to buy her a ring. As can be detected by the tone of the words I have been using, something bad happens to Susan. She is kidnapped by vampires and bitten. She will become a full blown vampire herself after her first feeding.
Harry and Susan both know this. She doesn’t want to risk it, and leaves him. Alas and Alack! But she wasn’t “the one.” Sha na na na, sha na na na, hey hey hey, good-bye!
Harry is devastated. He keeps the engagement ring on the mantle of his fireplace for like two more books. He is despondent; his heart is broken into little pieces, and in his grief and self imposed exile, turns into the stinky kid on the bus. He stops taking care of himself, even stops gaming.
And then, of all the gin joints in the world, she has to go and walk into his.
Elaine comes back in book four, Summer Knight. We all thought she was dead, but here she is. I don’t like Elaine. Not even a little. I didn’t like her when she was a flash back character, when I thought she was dead, and I most certainly did not like her alive and in Chicago and talking to my Harry. Where was she when he was hurting? Was she there when he had to fight werewolves, or giant scorpions, or be the friend he needed when Susan left the country to join the Fellowship of St. Guiles as we learned she did in the fifth book, Death Masks? No, I was. I was there. And now here she comes, like she didn’t almost kill him when she was under the mind control of an evil wizard. Some nerve on that one let me tell you. Thankfully, she is as unattainable as ever and has a lesser version of a detective agency in California. Book nine, White Knight has her heading back out there, and to that I say – good riddance. We don’t need her. Harry and I are fine without her. She’s not right either. She’s trouble that one. Bad Trouble, with a capitol “T”.
There was also the fallen angel, Lasciel, Harry called her Lash for short. Although she was not a girlfriend, but literally a voice in his head, they did have a “thing.” I say “thing” with quotation marks around it because Lash did manage to create an illusionary form of a woman that only Harry could see and he was getting sortta sweet on her. Ultimately, he figured it all out, and Lash stopped the temptation, but I suspect that she was sortta falling for him. Regardless of who was crushing on who, Lash did give up her immortal life and die so that Harry could live and continue to fight the good fight. She left him with the ability to play classical guitar and a mild form of basically harmless brain damage. Nothing Harry’s doctor, Butters the Medical Examiner, was too concerned about. And Harry, in a most beautifully written scene, played his guitar and wept for her. Brings to mind the John Lennon song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

In book 10,Small Favor, Harry and his boss Anastasia Luccio begin a relationship. She is several hundreds of years older than he, but in a previous book was body swapped ah-la Freaky-Friday* into the body of a hot evil babe. She seems to enjoy Harry’s company and certainly enjoys using her new body to play catch-up on all the sex she missed out on. But it won’t last. She’s not right for him, she is not the one. Luccio is a cougar, albeit a nice and pleasant one who seems to care for her boy toy, but, there is nothing there, it’s an empty thing. Harry doesn’t love her. She doesn’t love him. Neither seems to want to take their relationship to the next level. She may have a key to his apartment, but so does Murphy, his apprentice Molly and his brother Thomas. As you can see, Harry is just giving keys to his place out both willy and nilly. And Murphy, Harry’s best friend, happens to agree with me. We think it’s OK while its lasts, but it won’t last. We know this.
Not for nothing, Harry is a Byronic hero. (Google the word Byronic people, I can’t spell everything out for you!) A hero needs pain to grow. A Byronic hero needs lots of pain to live day to day. Harry gets three times the pain of any other hero out there. One day, when Harry and Luccio break up because of the pointlessness of it all, it won’t just be bad, it’ll hurt. Deeply. Deep hurting. And although I wouldn’t have it any other way, I’ll have to be there and cry it out with Harry, alone and in private.
Besides, if there is a girl for Harry in the series, we haven’t met her yet. I’ll know her when I see her. Harry can have whatever happiness he can eek out from these other women, but it’s always me who he tells his secrets to, who knows his intent, his heart desire, his fears. When “the big reveal” is about to happen and the wagons are circling, I’m not one of the folks he’s trying to hide or protect. I get to go on the missions with him. I know that he’ll die for others, but he’ll live for me. Although, admittedly, the book are told in a first person narrative, so it makes a kind of sense I would be in on all that stuff. And I may sound just a little bit on this side of crazy, but it’s not true, you’re just jealous because Harry and I are close.
So, that’s the story of how I met Harry Dresden. The story of how I met Jim Butcher… well, that’s a tale for another time.
QtR – Theresa Bane, Vampirologist and Stalker of Characters in Books

Order The Dresden Files Paperback Collection by Jim Butcher:

beautifully written.
well done.
nice artice, you are clearly not stalking a fictional character. but you forgot to mention that you are a vampirologist.
im not jelous of your closeness to harry im downright ready to kill any one who trys to kill harry blackstone copperfield dresden btw i loved your blog about harrys lovelife
This talk about Dresden as a hero is your own misperception, human. The out-of-control killer sorcerer must be stopped, the existence of all right-minded creatures across the Kingdoms of Summer and Winter, and the gray lands of his own domain, depend upon it! As a steward of the Tribal Union of Ghouls, Goblins and Trolls (Local 666), it’s my duty to kill… erm, to educate those creatures under Dresden’t glamour and enlist their membership to render him
into… ah, render him powerless.
Fight the power, bretheren!
Crihavoc, you old dog of war you!!!!
Stop Dresden??? Bring friends,,, lots of friends
I enjoyed reading it also. I would have to disagree with you on the idea that Harry doesn’t love Luccio. Unless I need to go back and re-read the books, I thought that Harry, had to have some real feelings for a person before he would sleep with them. I don’t think it is true love by any means. That is one of the qualities I liked about Harry, is that he has some morals. Because of his morals, he was rewarded with protection from the white vampire enthrallment which has saved him in the past. I really don’t think he would give that up too easily. I really do think Harry is smarter than that. He might make bad choices in woman department once in a while, but what nice guys don’t make a bad choice in that department. Personally I like Luccio myself. I think that most woman would take advantage of having a new, younger body. She did herself admit that she lost a lot because of the transfer, why not let her take advantage of her new body.
Phil – I think Crihavoc really has a secret crush on Harry. Like the boy that dunks the pretty girls pigtails into ink Crihavoc can only show that affection through acts of aggression.
Adam- I too agree with the notion that Luccio and Harry love each other. Is it the one true love? With Harry’s track record it makes it unlikely but either one would lay down their lives for the other and that must mean something.
I disagree with Adam and June.
Harry and Luccio are not in love. Are they in a relationship? Yes. Are they having sex with one another? Yes. But people can be in a relationship and have sex with one another and still not be in love. There is no evidence of it, not in the books or in the short stories.
Harry is not a player, and yes it is important to him that he has feelings for a person before he sleeps with them, but still this is not love.
By sleeping with Anastasia (Luccio) it is true that Harry has left himself vulnerable to the attack of White Court Vampires, but this was a long time coming anyway. The protection that Susan’s love gave Harry was fading and was already a thin veil of protection that a White Court Vampire could probably live through the assault should she attack him. In fact, this was said in the book where Harry and Ramirez went to the Mansion and meet with Lara and she let the cat out of the bag that Ramirez was a virgin.
I am not a fan of the Harry/ Anastasia match up. I have always felt that although they were dating it was never going to last. I will be the least surprised person when they break up. It’s inevitable, Harry needs pain to grow and motivate him. If they don’t break up, she has to die. It’s that simple.
I did not say they were in love, I said they love each other. There is a difference. They aren’t going to be together forever and I agree that killing her off would probably be best for Harry.
Well, I’m ‘wild about Harry’ too but mostly I love the humor, the self-deprecating kind as well as the snarky, pop culture reference kind. I like that he realizes most people don’t get his references too – he just sighs and moves on. I was a little disappointed that the tv show didn’t have the same atmosphere but I still liked it enough to mourn its passing.
Without Jim Butcher’s special brand of humor the Dresden Files would be a poorer place and I would be far less likely to listen to the books over and over. If the TV show had survived it’s infancy it might have picked up on more of why we love Harry & Company.
I actually discovered The Dresden Files through the audiobooks right on this here site. As a long-time Buffy fan, I had to at least check out what James Marsters was doing in his spare time. Well, I couldn’t afford the audio versions at the time, but I liked the writing enough to pick up the first paperback, and I haven’t looked back since.
It seems that Harry’s love life is doomed to be a series of disappointments and painful losses, yet I can help hoping that he’ll find the right person someday. I agree that none of the women he’s been with (or contemplated being with) are quite right for him. Susan is a lost cause for lack of a cure, and Elaine carries too much baggage from their teenage years. This new thing with Luccio is based on mutual respect, affection, and convenience, but not built to last. Murphy is probably the closest to the mark (at least in my mind), but at the same time I can’t imagine them working on a romantic level. Poor fella. At least he’s still got Bob.
(By the by, although ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ is a Beatles song, it was written by George Harrison, not Lennon.)
Oh. Oops. That should’ve been “…I can’t help hoping…”
has Harry lost it?
in all of the talk about whether or not harry is in love with luccio, the unasked question is this: does Harry still have his protection from the white court vamps? until he consumated his relationship with Luccio he always had that afterglow of his passion for susan protecting him. so does his new relationship negate that? does it set a new protection in place, or does it leave our hero vulnerable to future assaults?
perhaps this entire area of magical law needs to be explored in more detail.
no, Harry has lost his protection. He is wide open to attacks from the white court.
Harry isn’t any kind of hero.He is the anti hero.He does what he does for mostly his own selfish reasons, because he doesn’t want anyone else to blame him for what he can prevent or change.Heroes do what they do because it’s the right thing to do.Harry does what he does so He can say “it’s not my fault” if it goes bad.Don’t get me wrong,I love the books, but Harry is and always will be a flawed “person.” Maybe that’s what makes him more “real”than most characters in books.
I would agree that Harry is not perfect and his motivations may occasionally have a selfish element but…and here is where I depart agreement with Lance, Harry is a hero. A hero does not have to be perfect. In fact Peter Parker is much more of a hero to me than Captain America. To be human, make mistakes, be afraid and still do the right thing despite knowing you may forfeit your life that is being a hero. To fudge the rules in order to save a life doesn’t make one less of a hero. Harry has arguments with himself when he knows he is about to do some damn foolhardy thing in order to save an innocent or even a not-so-innocent. He does it because his conscience won’t let him walk away despite enormous odds against success and the tremendous cost to himself. For pity sake he was willing to snatch the coin that would put his soul at danger rather than having Michael’s son do so unwittingly. Harry Dresden is as close to a chivalrous knight that you could ever find in 21st century fiction. I too am wild about Harry.
I will always believe that Susan and Harry’s love was true, no matter what, she was there for him and he for her, and they have a child together. I was always hoping that in Ghost Story, that he would find her on the other side and they’d both return together, but alas….what a love, I wish everyone could find one like that.
I love going back and reading the books with those two together, how beautiful.
There can be true love without a happy ending. And there can be happy endings that don’t depend on romantic love.
Susan is definitely out (I’m brilliant, I know.), Elaine is not coming back, Murphy has just a few too many issues to find eternal happiness with Harry. Of all the women in Harry’s life, I liked his interactions with Lash, Luccio, and Lara (yes, the sexy, manipulative anti-villain vampire who has worked more than a few times with our P.I. wizard and seems to take a bit more pleasure in messing with him than to be considered professional). It might be a coincidence, but all three ladies have their (most commonly refereed) names start with ‘L’.
Lash’s loss was – and still is – devastating to me, I thought she and Harry had a good thing going on. By giving the shadow of Laschiel, Harry had managed to slowly turn Lash into an entity independent of the real fallen angel, mellowing her out, and eventually changing her enough that she willingly sacrificed herself so her host can live (I wept shamelessly when I got to that part). However, it gives me hope that the feminine and soothing voice at the end of “Changes” could very well be Lash herself.
Luccio, when she found out she was subtly manipulated into liking and sleeping with Harry, I believed to be emotionally torn to pieces, which was covered up quite well due to her sorta old-world views. They might not had been in love with each other, but I would like to think they meant a bit more to each other than simply friends-with-benefits.
Last but not least, Lara. True, she is manipulative, cunning, and completely ruthless in her pursuits of power when she needs to be, but generally speaking, has been quite civil and friendly with Harry throughout the novels, not to mention that they have both grown to admire, if not appreciate, each other’s gift and manipulating the other. On top of that, her pet name for him, “wizard mine”, certainly implies a certain degree of intimacy, the “mine” wouldn’t be used on just any wizard she knows.
Though all three make excellent candidates for Harry’s affection, I admit Lash’s and Luccio’s chances have grown slimmer (call me a sap, but I think they can still make a rebound), which leaves either Lara or some new and fresh female characters Butcher will decide to introduce in the upcoming books.
I like the idea of Luccio, a match of equals or nearly so. To be honest I’m a tad concerned about Molly Carpenter. Sure, Harry has distanced himself because of her youth and his position as her mentor makes him feel as if even noticing her that way is unethical. The problem is she has it bad for him (in my opinion), he is 100 percent human and 100 percent male, and they are in an awful lot of life and death situations. He may try to be her Yoda but she is no Luke Skywalker.
