What a way to start ! The crowds are massive but fun loving and generally more easygoing than the kind you find at other events of similar size. The trick is to be prepared for the stuff you feel you must not miss and just let the rest come to you in a sort of serendipitous experience.

Heat and hills, nice, I'll be right at home. Will be attending this con for the first time this year - it will be my first con ever. Can't wait!

I suppose that if you can only be there for one day then Sunday would be best. It is cheaper than Saturday so you would think that would make it less action packed but the Masquerade is Sunday night and that is one of my favorite things. OTOH Saturday is hopping. You say you are taking your 11 year old son, bet he would enjoy robot battles www.robotbattles.com and that is going on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday at 1 PM there is an attempt to break the Guiness World Recod for the largest gathering of Superheros-And that isn't even in an "official" Dragon Con hotel!! And at the same location @ 4pm there will be a gathering of Steampunk people also aiming to set a record. On SAturday night 830 PM @ the Sheraton it is try at a Guiness record for the largest gathering of Star Trek costumed people(that is before the 10PM Trek party in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton). Before making that decsion, have a look online at what programmining is going on on which days. There may be something that you postively will be upset if you missed so check out who is appearing and or performing om which day and time. Whatever day you choose to go please visit us while you are there. We will be downstairs in the dealer's room G12,11,10 and 9

Hey Rainyday-

There is no bad spot to watch from as long as you are by the curb. You really don't have to be there more than a half hour ahead of time to find something without a 7 foot tall person blocking you. OTOH even though you didn't ask about it I think you should know that you need to show up really early for the masquerade contest to get a good spot. Show up 15-30 minutes before scheduled and you'll find yourself in the overflow room at best. Why is that important? Because this is a live event and where would you rather be to see a live event, down close and personal or on a giant screen in another room? Don't get me wrong the big screens are helpful even when you are in the main room but...then again maybe I'm making to much of it.

Great tips for us newbies! A question I have that I can't find a good answer for: What time should I try to get to Peacthree Street to watch the parade? I know it starts at 10:00 but seriously, how early do people come and stake out spots? And where is the best spot to watch from?

What happens at Dragon Con does not necessarily stay in Dragon Con. People have cameras and camcorders and know how to use them. Be as silly as you like but don't get mad or faint if you find yourself up on YouTube. I'm not saying you should be self conscious all the time or paranoid thinking you will be singled out but if you are ditching work or school and are seen skipping along in the parade in pink spandex and silver lamé better make sure you have something that disguises your facial features as well.

Been going to Drgaoncon for over 10 years now (and working on the all volunteer staff) and this is a good starter article for sure. However, as of last year, we now have FOUR hotels. :o) Yep, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, and Sheraton.

I think another important point is that 'con is made possible by hundreds of volunteer staff members, and we're there because we love this stuff too, so if you're lost or need help with something, look for people with staff badges or staff lanyards, and we can help you or at least find someone who can.

Security staff will usually be stationed at the doors to the major ball rooms and dealer's rooms, and they should have headsets they can use to reach EMS or hotel staff if you have an emergency. Everywhere I go at con I see my fellow staffers, and even when we're off duty we still have our eyes open and we're ready to respond to problems, because it's just a hard habit to break. So yes, be cautious and aware of your surroundings, but also know that you're never far from help if something goes wrong.
